About our project
Game Gemernation Game Gemernation is patented didactic tool of informal education, made for students in primary, secundary and high schools as well as for free time centres and for the whole public.
It leads players troughout the Gemer – Malohont region in a playful way and familiarise them with its rich history, kultural and natural heritage.
The Gemernation game is based on popular game Monopoly where players buying out and discovering historical and natural monuments, castles, churches, bastions, natural phenomenons like endemits, national parks, caves or strategic industrial areas. At the same time players learn much from answering question about nationalities, habits and valuable sights from around the region.
And thanks to this game can sudents get to know their region better in a playful way.
Gemer – Malohont region, rich in history, culture and natural beauty, sadly doesn ́t recieve as promotion and publicity as it deserves. This fact motivated JuDr. Monika Vaškovičová, director of Agentúra pre rozvoj Gemera ( Gemer region development agency) to create a board game which could propagandise this region. Monika brought together few young people, enthusiastic about the idea ,who were willing to take a part in this interesting project. Our aim was to bring this beauty to a widest audience in unconvetional way. Fascinating information mostly not very well known, or not known at all abut history, culture and nature are brought to presence in a light, playful way. We, ofcourse, didn ́t mean to tutor anybody but we aimed to make a free time enjoyable for everybody while getting to know their own region.
Enhanced knowledge will help the players to develop their personality further and encrease the public awareness about the region which will lead to a better propaganda and at the end to a tourism growth.
This project takes a chance to improve the situation in our region and contributes to its development. The area has a lot to offer. It just needs to be presented in a right way. Board game brings something new in this development process and makes the learning journey full of excitement.
At the very beginning we created conditions to start the project, organised some lectures and put together basic ideas about graphics look thanks to a grant from Nadácia Orange (Orange foundation). The project attracted more and more attention and subsequently gained support from Brittish Council organisation where the idea enthused young people from Scottland so much that they came to Slovakia as a part of a student exchange program. Thanks to this grant were we able to finnish first two prototypes of the game and tested it in schools within the region. The next donation came from Úrad vlády SR ( Government Office of the Slovak Republik) and with these finances were we able to finalize the grafics, print the game and promotion materials, create a web site and organise Olympics for schools in the region.
Our aims can be put together in few points:
- Make an educational process more attractive for 15 year old and older students
- Offer an alternative to a standard education and show a multicultural dimension of this
- Show young people that free time can be spent meaningfully
- Present the rich history of the region, its natural beauty and cultural heritage not again just like a sum of facts but in a way that will inspire students wanting to learn more
- Motivate residents to be more active in regional matters
- Bring in new elements atractive for tourism and show new possibilities in tourism
- Mobilize young people in relation to their comunity
- Strenghten local patriotism in young people and encourage them to take more action in regional matters
